official stats and write-up for

Week 7

March 21, 2002

The events of week 7 started off, really, on Monday the 18th.  Jason and I (Jake) went to the bowling alley to practice, which normally isn't covered under the "recap" of the week.  This practice session, however, was an exception in more than one way.  First and foremost, we worked on getting Jason to start using the arrows to spot where he was going to throw the ball, instead of his previous method of just "trying to make it feel good."  A few games in the 160-180 range hinted that this could be the key to a successful new style of game for Jason.  The other noteworthy thing about this week's practice, is that neither of us remembered our practice card.  For those of you who aren't "in the know", in this league, you get a practice card with 21 free games on it, that you can use at any time except during "Cosmic Bowling".  Making matters worse, after we bowled a few "normal" games, we bowled some "Crazy Games", which is when you take an 8 pound ball, and roll it as hard as you possibly can, try to put massive amounts of hook on it, or likewise.  So, under the practice card, these would be free.  Having forgotten the cards, it cost us an extra $15 for those games. Only time would tell if the $35 practice would prove fruitful.

Thursday came, and a consensus was born.  Nobody was going to drink any beer. None.  Not at all.  Would this work? Would this not work?  It was a tense day in the office, but finally quittin' time came around, and we all met over at Nick's house for food.  After watching a Celebrity Boxing rerun, we took off for the bowling alley.  Confusion abounded when they had printed the wrong lane numbers on the score sheets.  People were walking all over, trying to find where they were supposed to be bowling.  Eventually, it was determined that we were on lane 30 (instead of 38) and that we'd be bowling the King Crabs, the current first-place team!  Could we win some games 2 weeks in a row?  Read on...

Game 1 started out strong, and finished even stronger.  Jason rolled 5 strikes in 6 frames en route to a season-high 193, and Jake marked in every frame in his team-leading 201 game.  Christina came out with a 12-over average 141, and Nick bowled well enough (13 under average) to give us the win.  These games were enough to total to our best team-game of the season (to date)- 645 scratch and 908 with handicap.

Game 2 started for Jake and Jason with 3 open frames each, which eventually led to scores slightly below their averages.  Nick, who couldn't catch a break all night, bowled a 101, and Christina made most of her spares and finished with 3 strikes in her 182 game.  Unfortunately, her 53-over average game wasn't enough to counter the mighty power that is the King Crabs, and we lost this one by 28 pins. A note to all you arm-chair bowlers out there - that's 3 more spares.

There wasn't anything really great or bad about game 3.  Christina picked up the 5-6 split, which is good, and Nick still couldn't bowl a strike.  He got to throw 60 balls over the course of the 3 games, which can only be bettered by marking in the 10th frame and getting an extra ball.  I dare say, however, that this could be the "most for the money" that I've ever seen anyone bowl and still break 100 every game.  Kudos!

Overall, we won 2 games and the series.  Depending on how other teams bowled, this could theoretically take us into as high as 11th place.  But I doubt it.  A lot of people would have to lose a lot of games.
