Not Quite Sober
official stats and write-up for
Week 8
March 28, 2002
Week 8 started with some shocking news: Christina
said she was not going to be able to bowl on Thursday. Now, since her
name always shows up as "Christ" on the score sheets, and this was
the week before Easter, and we bowl on Thursdays, I could make a joke about
her having a "supper" that she had to go to, but that would be sacrilegious
even by my standards. Anyhow, she was able to pre-bowl on Tuesday,
which involves going to the bowling alley and having one of the lane jockeys
watch you and verify your scores, which are allowed to be submitted on
league night. On Wednesday, we were delighted to see her scores of
127, 166, and 157.
Wednesday night we bravely battled the Hooters
wings again, with nobody getting sick this time. Also at Hooters,
I was invited to the "WB-36 Pin Pals
Invitational" - a night of Simpsons Trivia and Bowling! Being
"invited" to this really just meant "being at wherever the
local WB station was giving out invitations that night" but still, it
was pretty cool.
Finally, Thursday rolled around, and with everyone having a
pretty good day at work, it seemed like a good night of bowling was
ahead. A pre-bowling dinner of burgers and fries at Nick's
house got us pumped up, and we went to the bowling alley determined to crush
whomever our opponents were.
The first game started out good, with Jason
busting out a turkey in the first three frames. After that, however,
he started having difficulty capitalizing on the strikes, following them
with first-ball rolls of 0, 1, and another 1, before finally getting a
7. You could tell he was unsatisfied with his 6-strike 166 game,
but the score was solid enough to cover Jake's
26-under average 134 , and carry the team to a first-game victory.
The second game saw, for the first time, every team member
score better than 150 in the same game. In fact, the lowest score was
a 161, shared by Nick
and Jason.
Combined with Jake's
196, and Christina's
166, this brought our total to a 684 (scratch) and 941 with handicap!
Both of those totals demolished our previous team records, and allowed us to
coast to a 120 pin victory in the second game.
Could we make a clean sweep and win every game for the first
time this season?
No.
Jake
finished with a solid 191, and for the second game in a row was one
"missed easy spare" away from a 200+ game. Jason
came through with a respectable 8-under average 121, and Christina's
157 (as mentioned above) was another 30-over average performance. Nick,
however, got a bunch of bad breaks in a row, and got into a funk. His
final score of 90 gave us a total that, after handicap, game the team its
first loss of the night, by a mere 10 pins. One spare. One lousy
spare kept us from sweeping the series. Ah well...
